By Henri Korn, Jewish Care volunteer
My name is Henri Korn and I have a long standing relationship with Jewish Care. I have been volunteering with the organisation for over 15 years and began by visiting people at Montefiore Homes.
Today, I am privileged to sit on the Holocaust Survivor Committee. I am also a speaker/presenter at Jewish Care’s Induction ‘Ethos Day’ training, where I speak to all new staff, building upon their capacity to understand the needs of those they support. I draw the attention of the impact that the Holocaust had on the Jewish community in Europe in the hope that such tragedies do not happen again.
Education is a key to my volunteering.
Through my volunteering I have learnt the importance of assisting people in need and of bringing a smile to other people’s faces. I have learnt that a kind word, a hand warmly held, a word of encouragement, and time spent reminiscing a distant past would be sufficient to dissipate the ghosts of despair.
Volunteering does not only help the needy, but also helps the needs of the volunteer.
