CELEBRATING OUR YOUNG ACHIEVERS: A NIGHT OF HOPE, SONG AND UNITY
Mentees, mentors, families and donors were delighted to join together in December for the Young Achievers Program end-of-year dinner celebration in what was an incredible night of hope, song and unity.
Now in its 24th year, Young Achievers is a year-long mentoring program that supports students in Years 10 - 12 to develop new skills, meet other young people, and strengthen their connection to the Jewish community. A total of 29 mentees completed the program in 2024.
Following an acknowledgement of country and words of hope from Rabbi Ralph Genende, newly-appointed Chief Executive Officer Gayle Smith commended the participants for their resilience and determination.
“The purpose of tonight is to acknowledge the enormous efforts of this year’s mentees and mentors. It genuinely fills me with great hope and joy to see the people who really do represent the future – of our community; our organisation; and indeed, our world,” said Smith.
Throughout the evening, attendees were treated to an uplifting musical performance delivered by the mentees and heard inspiring words from young people and mentors alike about the impact of the program in their lives.
“I’ve had the privilege of meeting so many people with the most inspirational insights into life, at a time when I needed the community more than I ever had before. YAP has emphasised the strength and power of our Jewish heritage,” said mentee Kara Freitag.
“These workshops and gatherings are more than lessons. They are moments that have shaped my values and given me role models within my community, reminding me of the impact we can all have on each other,” echoed Rockford Levine.
Program founder and major donor Philip Brass AO shared his own journey of mentoring, before presenting the participants with their scholarships. Congratulations to Rockford Levine and Ariella Schafner who were awarded the Bettie Kornhauser scholarship, endowed by the Kornhauser family in memory of their late mother.
“Having a safe space for Jewish identity and connection was more important than ever this past year,” said Young Achievers Coordinator Chanie Belfer. “To see these young people come together and support one another, building genuine friendships and a true community, was incredibly inspiring.”
Our very sincere thanks to the volunteer mentors and program donors, without whom with Young Achievers Program simply wouldn’t be possible - and kol hakavod to our mentees, including the wonderful performers, speakers and our event MCs, Natalie and Evie. We were also delighted on the night to welcome our new Young Achievers program assistant Julian Munz who will be supporting the program in the new year.
Mazel tov to all and we look forward to an exciting 2025!
