Elders Move In To New Home

Ninety-three Elders from Jewish Care’s Montefiore Homes moved into their exciting new home at the Hannah & Daryl Cohen Family Building on Tuesday 28 April 2020.

Elders at the Hannah & Daryl Cohen Family Building will be supported by our dedicated staff over the settling in period through our innovative model of support, Hand in Hand.

Jewish Care volunteers created hand-written greeting cards for each of the Elders, which accompanied individual housewarming gifts.

Nicola Bull, Residential Home Manager – Windsor, said Elders at Montefiore Homes have been eagerly awaiting this day for many months, for some it has been a matter of years!

“Having the opportunity to watch the Hannah & Daryl Cohen Family Building grow from the ground up has been incredibly exciting for our Elders. Being part of this amazing journey has engendered a great deal of anticipation and excitement.  Moving into the new home has been something to look forward too, especially in these challenging times.”

Each Elder received a hand-written card from volunteers and a housewarming gift as they entered their new home, and will be supported by our dedicated staff through our innovative Hand-in-Hand model of support.

Elders are enjoying their new home, with many who previously favoured solitude in their rooms keenly exploring their living spaces, spending time in the luscious winter garden, and eating meals in their cosy home dining room.

Nathan and Stanley, Elders at the Hannah & Daryl Cohen Family Building, respectively commented “It’s like a five-star hotel!” and “Wow! I don’t deserve this.”

“I would like to warmly welcome our Elders to their new home and thank them for their patience and cooperation, both during construction and the move,” said Susie Ivany OAM, President of Jewish Care.

“This is a wonderful day for Jewish Care and our Elders. I wish that we were able to share today with our community as we had planned and I’m especially disappointed that families could not physically be there to share the special day with their loved ones,” continued Ivany. “We look forward to welcoming families, friends, and our community to the Hannah & Daryl Cohen Family Building once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted and it is safe to do so.”

Chief Executive Office of Jewish Care, Bill Appleby highlighted the significance of the Hannah & Daryl Cohen Family Building, saying; “This is a proud moment in Jewish Care’s 171-year history. We have been dreaming of this day for the better part of a decade and gives me great pleasure to finally see Elders moving into their new home.”

“I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Jewish Care Board for its vision for providing better care and support for the elderly and the community as a whole; and express my gratitude to the leadership team and staff for their dedication, teamwork, and tenacity in making our vision a reality.”

Appleby finished by saying; “To our community; the Hannah & Daryl Cohen Family Building is for you. Thank you for your unwavering support of Jewish Care and generous investment in the health and wellbeing off the community, now and for generations to come.”

Located at the gateway of Melbourne’s most beautiful and grand city boulevard, the newly built, leading-edge Hannah & Daryl Cohen Family Building represents Jewish Care’s vision, extensive research, and insights from the Melbourne Jewish community.

The leading-edge aged care and community services hub spans nine storeys, and comprises seven levels of residential aged care and two levels of community services, including health and medical facilities, financial services, rehabilitation services, a modern light filled day therapy centre, an employment service, extensive education amenities, and modern social spaces for Elders and visitors to enjoy.

Each of the seven levels of aged care consists of two memory care friendly houses of no more than 16 beds. Designed for easy navigation, each house is built around spacious, light-filled communal spaces that include warm, contemporary, integrated dining and lounge rooms and a fully accessible kosher kitchen, with bedrooms located off a single direction corridor.
