Quality Care at Gary Smorgon House

17 March 2021

In February, the Australian Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission conducted an unannounced full review audit at Gary Smorgon House as part of its regular monitoring and accreditation system.

The Commission has notified Jewish Care of its finding that Gary Smorgon House is not fully compliant with some of the quality standards that are part of the Commonwealth Government’s aged care accreditation framework.

However, Gary Smorgon House remains fully accredited, and Jewish Care is pleased to report that the Commission will not shorten the home’s accreditation period, which can occur where the Commission has concerns. Nonetheless, the Commission has advised that Jewish Care must improve its approach in areas relating to ongoing assessment and planning with consumers, personal care and clinical care, human resources and organisational governance.

“I know how tirelessly our staff and managers work to provide the highest quality of care at Gary Smorgon House. I share their disappointment that on this occasion, for the first time since we opened this lovely home in 2009, some areas have been identified as requiring improvement”, said Chief Executive Officer Bill Appleby.

“I have written to elders and family members and given them my strongest assurance that we are working with the Commission and are well advanced in acting on the areas identified”, said Bill Appleby.

“Actions underway include providing additional clinical support to all staff through new senior appointments, such as our new Residence Manager and Clinical Services Manager; ensuring more consistency in how we document the care we deliver and how we collaborate with elders and families; and providing more comprehensive information to elders and families about feedback and external complaint mechanisms, so that we can act on any concerns more quickly”, said Bill Appleby.

“I want to thank staff and the many elders and families who assisted the Commission’s assessors during the audit. This process is immensely valuable in helping us to identify areas where we can continue to improve. I encourage all families and elders to continue to provide feedback, including by lodging a ‘Your Say’ form that is available in the home and online at www.jewishcare.org.au/page/contact/your-say.”

“We will continue to keep elders and families and staff updated”, said Bill Appleby.
