Jewish Care Victoria has launched its video, ‘I Am Jewish’ to commemorate Tisha B’Av, a day that marks various tragedies in Jewish history (1 August 2017). I Am Jewish is the 5th video in the ‘Rising From the Ashes’ Holocaust documentary series.
The emotive video interviews Holocaust survivors who have a relationship with Jewish Care as clients, aged care residents, volunteers and donors. The survivors answer questions about whether the tragedies they witnessed during the Holocaust have changed their core beliefs in Judaism, their Jewish identity and religiosity.
As Holocaust survivor, Marianna Shwarz said in the video: "I have a strong belonging to the Jewish people that is unshakable. As a child, I used to love going to synagogue. But I lost my religion on the way.”
“I want my children and grandchildren to continue in the same way, and not to forget that they are Jewish... we suffered so much for being Jews, and I don’t want this suffering to have been for nothing,” Holocaust survivor, Eva Migdalek said.
Tisha B'Av is a significant date in regards to the Holocaust. Hermann Goring signed a document to decree The Final Solution the day before Tisha B'Av 1941. The first cattle cars filled with Jewish people left the Warsaw Ghetto for Treblinka on Tisha B'Av July 23 1942.
Other videos in the series, ‘The Greatest Loss’ and ‘Strength to Survive’ have been accepted by Yad Vashem (The World Holocaust Remembrance Center) to be included in their collection of films in The Visual Centre.
The series aims to highlight how the trauma experienced by Holocaust survivors transcends generations and impacts their children and grandchildren, and to ensure we will never forgot what happened.
Jewish Care connects with thousands of survivors living in Victoria through the Holocaust Survivor Support Program and other community services which addresses their needs in areas such as home and personal care, socialisation, counselling, housing support and assistance to receive restitution pensions and payments. The Program receives funding from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany ('Claims Conference').
